Captured: Geological activity of moon

Posted on | May 9, 2012 | No Comments

New images from NASA’s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) spacecraft have revealed that the moon’s crust is being stretched, forming minute valleys in a few small areas on the lunar surface.

Scientists propose this geologic activity occurred less than 50 million years ago, which is considered recent compared to the moon’s age of more than 4.5 billion years.
A team of researchers analyzing high-resolution images obtained by the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter Camera (LROC) show small, narrow trenches typically much longer than they are wide.
This indicates the lunar crust is being pulled apart at these locations. These linear valleys, known as graben, form when the moon’s crust stretches, breaks and drops down along two bounding faults. A handful of these graben systems have been found across the lunar surface.
“We think the moon is in a general state of global contraction because of cooling of a still hot interior,” said Thomas Watters of the Center for Earth and Planetary Studies at the Smithsonian’s National Air and Space Museum in Washington, and lead author of a paper on this research.
“The graben tell us forces acting to shrink the moon were overcome in places by forces acting to pull it apart. This means the contractional forces shrinking the moon cannot be large, or the small graben might never form.” The weak contraction suggests that the moon, unlike the terrestrial planets, did not completely melt in the very early stages of its evolution. Rather, observations support an alternative view that only the moon’s exterior initially melted forming an ocean of molten rock.
In August 2010, the team used LROC images to identify physical signs of contraction on the lunar surface, in the form of lobe-shaped cliffs known as lobate scarps.
The scarps are evidence the moon shrank globally in the geologically recent past and might still be shrinking today. The team saw these scarps widely distributed across the moon and concluded it was shrinking as the interior slowly cooled.
Based on the size of the scarps, it is estimated that the distance between the moon’s center and its surface shank by approximately 300 feet. The graben were an unexpected discovery and the images provide contradictory evidence that the regions of the lunar crust are also being pulled apart.
“I immediately targeted the area for high-resolution stereo images so we could create a three-dimensional view of the graben. It’s exciting when you discover something totally unexpected and only about half the lunar surface has been imaged in high resolution. There is much more of the moon to be explored,” Robinson added.
“This pulling apart tells us the moon is still active,” said Richard Vondrak, LRO Project Scientist at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md. “LRO gives us a detailed look at that process.”
As the LRO mission progresses and coverage increases, scientists will have a better picture of how common these young graben are and what other types of tectonic features are nearby. The graben systems the team finds may help scientists refine the state of stress in the lunar crust.
“It was a big surprise when I spotted graben in the far side highlands,” said co-author Mark Robinson of the School of Earth and Space Exploration at Arizona State University, principal investigator of LROC.
The study has been published in the journal Nature Geoscience.

One of the most efficient way to protect our privacy is to not let our browser know which sites are we visiting. This can be done using incognito window in chrome, Mozilla and explorer. However it helps in preventing only the websites saved in the browser. Even the service provider can implant software and track the websites you have visited.

The issue of privacy is quite serious as the way of communication has changed a lot with a central server accessible to many. Now you don’t have to send info, in turn others can view your data. Earlier email was used to send images but now you upload the images i.e. cloud system and that can be accessible from anywhere to view images. Here the main issue is that we our self are not aware as to what information should be made available to whom and in what content.

The issue of privacy is a major concern. The issue of privacy is quite tricky. If you are too much concerned about privacy than the best advice would be to not put anything online.

HPC Bull and SMEs are betting big on cloud

25 SMEs were involved in the project NumInnov Bull, to establish a platform dedicated to cloud computing uses of supercomputing.

Bull is slowly becoming a big name in the world of supercomputing. The French firm took advantage of his expertise in this field to launch the project NumInnov a platform for cloud computing on dedicated, grade Silicon.fr.

To boost the initiative, Bull created the NumInnov Club, which already includes 25 innovative SMEs.

The purpose of this group is to bring together actors software and services around new uses of computing in the cloud. New bids could emerge in areas of local, defense, medicine, media and security.

“Bull is the only company in the world in 2011 to install three supercomputers whose power exceeds the helm of pet flops (one quadrillion operations per second), says Philippe Vannier, president and CEO of Bull. Our cloud computing project – the ‘digital service innovation’ – is built to develop a successful ecosystem for SMEs so that the HPC covers safe new areas. ”

Club members will receive support NumInnov Bull and enjoy the campus infrastructure Treated Buyers-le-Chattel (Essence), known as the site where is located the Tera 100, the first petaflop supercomputer in Europe.

Security a major fault has been detected on LinkedIn

An independent researcher has found a major security flaw in the LinkedIn connection system that could potentially cause the theft or account modification, nose and beard of users.

And with success comes the attacks. LinkedIn is barely entered the stock market a safety specialist has found a serious flaw of security when connecting to the professional social network.

Rishi Narang, a security consultant and researcher based in Los Angeles, said on his blog he found “a multitude of problems in the way LinkedIn manages cookies,” and added that these flaws “may lead to piracy or modification account.”

Through explanatory videos, the analyst shows that if the connection is made via LinkedIn to the secure HTTPS protocol, the user is then redirected to a standard HTTP connection. This is the homepage of the user who is responsible for sending these cookies contain identifying information.

These cookies are sent in clear text and can be retrieved from the browser options. Moreover, these small files are still valid even when the user disconnects from the network. “In just 15 minutes I was able to access multiple active accounts belonging to individuals located in different parts of the world,” says the researcher. He explained that this manipulation works even if the user makes a change of password.

The only scenario making cookies is to close its inefficient LinkedIn account and reopen it with the same e-mail subscription. An important method since it would have to invite again all of its contacts

A blow to LinkedIn, whose site is used to boost its professional network of over 100 million members. “The users must limit their visits to the site if they are not connected to Wi-Fi password protected going on, “advises the consultant.

Facebook the stock market plunge in early 2012

Posted on | July 6, 2011 | No Comments

According to an analysis from CNBC, Facebook could benefit from a window of the first quarter of 2012 to go public. The introduction of Facebook on the stock market is the most anticipated in the IT sector.

And it could be put quickly. According to CNBC, the social network may go public by the end of the first quarter of 2012. So far, we spoke of a possible break until April 2012. The recovery is dizzying: it could exceed $ 100 billion, according to the economic and financial TV channel.

To support his hypothesis, it builds based on various signals, showing that Facebook is activated in this direction. First, the SoundBits of its leaders. Last month at a conference, Sheryl Sandberg, Facebook’s Director General said that the IPO was now “inevitable.” “This will be the next big thing will happen.”

But this is not enough to be truly fixed. Especially since Mark Zuckerberg has a tendency to evade the subject. “The IPO is not on the agenda,” stated co-founder of Facebook at the e-G8 Forum held in late May in Paris. Asked by CNBC Monday, June 13, the direction Facebook is no comment.

Compared to SEC Regulation (stock market watchdog in the U.S.), the IPO seems inevitable. On behalf of the “Rule 500 investors” (“the 500 rule”), Facebook would begin publishing quarterly financial results by April 2012. Financial experts believe that Facebook have a window of opportunity in the first quarter of 2012. Moreover, it would be a motivational tool for employees of Facebook, who might be tempted to part with their securities, warrants Facebook they have accumulated.

Netflix targeted by Sony. The Japanese giant will lead the Japanese giants in a wave of takeovers not seen for years: 2.4 trillion dollars in cash to spend in M & A

To recover from the triple shock of the tsunami-earthquake-nuclear leaks, Japan is to open the purse strings to give themselves to shopping. The figure that Japanese companies led by Sony and Fujifilm, are going to spend in M&A (mergers and acquisitions) is huge: $ 2.4 trillion. America expects a wave of acquisitions; takeovers will follow the $ 25 billion spent on acquisitions in the borders. The astonishing figures surpass the previous record of 2006. Japan has a strong currency, the yen against the dollar: a force that weakens one side sales (see the last quarter Sony), but the other is for use in acquisitions.

Sony, with the worst quarter in 50 years, and Fujifilm, which comes from five years of decline in sales, wants to take advantage of the strong yen to strengthen overseas. In all, 13 niupponici giants that will give the shopping of the decade. Sony has cash to 8.3 billion dollars in reserves. According to Bloomberg, Sony may be trying to acquire Netflix or IMAX. Netflix has a value of market capitalization of 13.9 billion dollars.

Green light for ultra book Atom and accelerates development. The chip Medfield for tablet

Among the novelties of Computex 2011 is marked by the presentation of an aggressive plan for Intel to make inroads in the market for mobile devices. It begins the proposal of a new category of notebooks, the “ultra book” thin and energy efficient, but also offer some features of table t, to touch. Intel forecast by the end of 2012, 40 percent of notebooks sold will be a ultra book. And Intel seems to be ready with its roadmap to Core chip that provides Ivy Bridge for next year and then another Core (Haswell) able to enter into smart phones and tablet.

Atom is not abandoned even that there is a new generation every year. The partners strictly Asian, who immediately followed Intel were Asus and Acer, with a ultra book later this year. Ivy Bridge is the first chip produced in large quantities based on 22nm manufacturing technology from Intel, which employs the 3D tri-gate transistor, the ‘architecture announced last May.

After Ivy Bridge, the products planned for 2013, codenamed Haswell, the third step towards the realization of Ultrabook and renewal of the features of ultra-thin, lightweight notebook design, characterized by fast response times and greater safety. With Haswell, Intel will change the TDP of mainstream notebooks, halving the power consumption of microprocessors compared to actual parameters.
